Installing the Home Lab – Installing the Synology Syslog Server

In this post we are going to configure the Synology Syslog server so that we can get rid of the message below that occurs because my servers use the SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB drives

First of all we need to log in to our Synology NAS device, in my case this is a Synology DS1513+ running DSM 4.3.3810.

In the top corner press the menu button to bring up the above menu, click Control Panel

Click Shared Folder

Click Create

Now we are going to create the folder where all the logs are going to be kept

Tick the Hide this shared folder in “My Network Places” box

Click OK

Folder present, next we are going to install the Syslog server

In the top corner press the menu button to bring up the above menu, click Package Center

We can see that we currently don’t have anything installed, click in the search bar and type syslog

Click the Install button

The Syslog Server icon drops in to the quick launch menu, click on it to launch the Syslog Server

The first time you run it you will be prompted to enable the Syslog Server, click OK

image

Tick the Enable Syslog server and choose the location for the log files (syslog). Click Apply

Your Syslog server is now up and running, ready to receive data.

In the next post I will configure the infrastructure to point to our new Syslog Server.
